ILO celebrated the 2023 International Day for Women in Maritime through the virtual forum entitled “Mobilizing Networks for Gender Equality,” organized by the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and the National Maritime Polytechnic (NMP). The ILO Ship to Shore Rights South East Asia programme works closely with DMW and NMP to support skills training and certification of Filipino sea-based migrants, particularly Filipino fishers on foreign-flagged commercial fishing vessels.
During the Forum, the ILO Country Director for the Philippines delivered a message supporting the manifesto of commitment towards a barrier-free environment for Filipino Women in the Maritime sector: “It is my hope that this celebration will improve understanding of the challenges faced by women seafarers, and eventually, improve their working conditions in all forms of employment within the maritime sector.”
