ILO and IOM organized the 1st Workshop on Development of the ASEAN Guidelines on the Placement and Protection of Migrant Fishers on 27-28 October in Jakarta, Indonesia, together with ASEAN-ACT and the ALFA project. Over 90 participants from governments, employers’ organizations, workers’ organizations and civil society organizations attended the workshop – representing all 10 ASEAN countries and Timor-Leste. The delegates provided extensive feedback on the background paper and outline that were presented, which will be used to support the development of the zero draft of the guidelines in December 2023. The Guidelines are expected to be a non-binding regional instrument to support practical implementation of the commitments made by ASEAN Member States for better protection of migrant fishers in the ASEAN Declaration adopted in May 2023.
