New Migrant Worker Resource Center Implemented by Future Light Center in Bago Region of Myanmar

The ILO Ship to Shore Rights South East Asia has signed an implementation agreement for a migrant worker resource centre (MRC) with the Future Light Center in Bago Region.

As a major area of origin, it is important that potential migrants in the Bago region have access to accurate and up-to-date information on safe migration. If migrants are not well-informed and empowered enough to assert their rights, they are more likely to be exploited during their recruitment and employment. By operating an MRC in Bago, migrants will be able to access critical information and services, including information on safe migration and labour rights, pre-departure orientation seminars, training on financial literacy, access to legal assistance to resolve their grievances and preventative materials for COVID-19. The current programme will build on the success of the Future Light Center’s work with migrants in Bago, as well as more heavily engage with the sectoral specificities of work in fishing and seafood processing. With additional support from the Ship to Shore Rights SEA programme, the activities will support safe migration into the fishing and seafood processing sectors, as well as expand access to reintegration services for returning migrants.
