On 27 April 2024, the ILO Ship to Shore Rights South East Asia programme launched a new Migrant Worker Resource Centre (MRC) in Tegal Municipality. Tegal is located in the north costal area of Java Island, bordering the Java Sea. According to data from the Indonesian Migrant Worker Protection Agency, more than 1,400 Indonesians from this municipality found employment overseas on foreign fishing vessels during 2015 to 2023.

The new MRC in Tegal will provide prospective and current migrant fishers with information about safe migration for decent work, including the opportunity to lodge complaints for cases of labour rights abuses. In addition, counselling services and community outreach activities will be conducted so that potential migrant fishers can make informed decision before migrating to work overseas. The ILO will support capacity building of MRC staff, including local stakeholders in target villages, to ensure that high-quality and effective services are provided to migrant fishers.
