On 12 March 2024, the ILO delivered a guest lecture at Chulalongkorn University on the working conditions for migrant workers in Thailand’s fishing and seafood processing sectors. The lecture was provided during the Globalization course at the Master of Arts in International Development Studies programme at Chulalongkorn University. A total of 35 enthusiastic graduate students participated in the class, engaging in a rich discussion of the challenges related to labour rights abuses and illegal fishing practices within the industry. The session highlighted the significant international attention paid to these issues and Thailand’s ongoing efforts to address them.

Moreover, students were offered the unique opportunity to experience firsthand the realities of working on a trawler heading out to sea in Rayong through the use of virtual reality goggles. The equipment allowed them to gain firsthand insight into the daily lives of migrant workers employed in this demanding and hazardous sector of work.
